When photography becomes photocopy

Prasenjeet Gautam

Recently I have met a few beginner photographers and came to know about their job profiles, they are working for an e-commerce company and shooting their products for online selling. Their job starts from morning to evening and ends up shooting same product line, same light condition, same treatment, same clients, same requirement, same indoor photography etc they are getting very less salary for doing all these jobs. In my language, they are photocopying the images and they are very far away from the photography (sorry for that).

In this job scenario, they are only shooting the same requirement and not exploring the creative part of photography. they are bound to follow the same angle, same colour correction, same treatment etc

From my point of view, photography cannot be done on a job basis because it is a creative world and not having any dead ends. We photographers are very passionate about the subject, lights, angle, weather condition, indoor high-quality lighting system, plenty of lenses, software, photography accessories etc and one single job cannot serve photography creatives and cannot groom you so well.

Doing a photography job will lose many things definitely which is mentioned below

  1. No client interaction will never learn client handling
  2. The job will never evolve you as a creative photographer because you have to press the shutter button as per your boss or clients
  3. No exploration, wait for the order to press the shutter button
  4. You are an employee, not a photographer, You have no right to shoot as per your choices or your creative ideas
  5. Photographer has no time, he is free to shoot even in late night, early morning and he is not dependent on the company’s timetable
  6. Gradually your creativity will end up, you will always need an order or direction to follow to shoot. may become a handicap, will be depending upon the orders
  7. You will never think of collecting your photography kit because your company provides you to shoot. It is a big loss, believe me.
  8. You cannot develop writing habits because someone is writing for you
  9. Less opportunity
  10. Less exposure, your company will be famous not you as a photographer (Its a truth)

Doing Photography for your own or you choose to be your boss then it evolves you as better pro-photographer like you explore your idea to sell, You interact and improve you client handling skill, communication skills, you develop your photography style, you generate good business relationship and that pay for a lifetime whereas in the job there is always a job losing fear factors which keeps on developing in you and which never let you be a pro-photographer. In your business you have plenty of opportunities that may introduce to you as per different photography genres required. The sky is the limit.

Conclusion – Photography cannot be done on the job or regular basis. It is related to your soul, feelings, photography eye, creative aspect etc.

keep experimenting! have a happy photography life to you all
