Commercial Vs Editorial Photography

Prasenjeet Gautam

Most of the people are always confuse about commercial and editorial photographs. Even beginner photographers also confused sometimes. There is a huge difference between commercial and editorial photography. Let’s clear the doubt about both the photography and understand the right genre wisely. Never mix both the genre together otherwise you will get confuse.

Commercial Photography – Those photographs used for marketing, to promote products, to promote sales & services, used for advertising always called commercial photography. These photographs always work as strong tool for the marketing. Companies spend hell lot of money for photography, videography, concept and idea etc for brand promotion. Like Tv advertisements, magazines advertisements, big banner, big posters etc. These photographs are created, preplanned before the shoot and as per the client’s requirement.

These photographs captured with the permission of models, location, legal permission etc. No photographer capture ever commercial photographs without proper permission from the clients etc In a simple way those photographs contribute sales and services of the clients is called commercial photographs.

Examples of commercial photography

  • Film and television
  • Commercial website
  • Brochure, catalogue
  • Product packaging
  • Presentation
  • Print and digital media
  • Marketing and promotional material
  • Digital plateform

Editorial Photography – Those photographs based on current events, stories, current affairs etc and convey meaningful stories and also introduce you inner part of business, politics, travel, life portrait etc These photographs always used for newspaper, magazine etc Those photographer covers editorial photographs known as photojournalist, they capture war, agitations, protest, people in good or worse condition, draught, flood, fairs, cultural events etc The photographs which are not preplanned, not hired people, location, products, etc. On the other hand I would like to mention that A true reflection what camera captures, no accessories, no make-over ever added to these editorial photographs. See the below posted photographs

Examples of editorial photography

  • Newspaper
  • Magazine
  • Documentories
  • News broadcast

Conclusion – These two photography genres are totally different from each other, each one having different style, different purpose, different odeon, different way of capturing especially in the editorial photography (No re-take) whereas in commercial photography, there are so many retake to shoot. Choose your style, your photography genres etc. All the best

Keep experimenting ! Have wonderful and Happy Photography life for you all.
