Capture PORTRAIT in the natural light.

Prasenjeet Gautam

As I always preferred and advise to shoot a portrait in natural light. I always admired natural light as my favourite light for the correct, great and impressive exposures. Here I would like to mention that portrait shoot in natural light creates MAGIC and Marvellous Photographs. But there are end numbers of beginner photographer always scares of HARSH Light and other un-controlling situation. But if someone is looking for a better career option in photography then controlling the situation is your win-win situation and will elevate you for the better photographer.

There are end numbers of excuses are given by the photographer to avoid portrait in natural light. Let’s understand the excuses.

  • Who will take the location’s permission to shoot?
  • Model’s Protection issues for the outdoor shoot?
  • Who will handle other public, who may interrupt the shooting?
  • Handling photography equipment and other accessories are a headache
  • Heat may spoil the model’s make-up etc every time a makeup artist disturb the model to remove sweat, dust etc
  • Bad weather may cancel the shoot.
  • Bla Bla Bla

Conclusion – Every work has an excuse to avoid the job in life and the profession. Being a photographer, It is our job to introduce something amazing, out of the box and stunning photographs to the viewers and for that, you need to take the pain. No pain and No gain.

Now let’s forget excuses and discuss the portrait shoot in the natural light. Few important things to follow.

  • Must carry less photography equipment, must know the correct kit to carry. otherwise will spending more time handling the kit.
  • Legal permission always gives you peace of mind to shoot your model. I never advise shooting a portrait in any well known public location, tourist spots etc without legal permission. Permission supports you to shoot better otherwise authorised person of the location can seize your equipment etc and cancel your shoot, which may be an annoying situation for you and your models. Small location payment hardly matters for all the photographers.
  • Never ever miss to carry reflectors. diffuser etc Its help to control harsh light.
  • Choose the correct outfit for the natural light shoot. You must know in advance that which colour, style looks more prominent on your model and which makes better photographs.
  • Background selection is an art. You must know the distracting background is injurious to your photographs.
  • Must check weather condition, never finalize your shoot in extreme hot and cold. Choose peppy weather which enhances the beauty of your model and as well as your photograph.
  • Never ever go for too long a distance (out of the city, town) to shoot and it makes your model tiring. Always shoot the fresh faces.
  • If planning to go for a long-distance location then must reach the location one day before.
  • Always reach early in the morning to shoot and must visit the location in advance for better pre-planning.

Conclusion – Where there is a will, there is a way. Keep up the good work

Keep experimenting! have wonderful and happy photography life for you all.
