Theory of the FOCUS, Single, Continuous & AutoFOCUS options

Prasenjeet Gautam

There are multiple focus points in your DSLRs, each option is going to scare you until or unless you do not understand all the focus options deeply. It is advisable to understand each option one by one thoroughly. I started photography a long time back. I choose the one focus option to shoot for the whole shooting day with no change in focus option. This small and regular photography exercise helped me a lot. I had lots of photographs to compare with other focus options. It helped me to understand all the focus options. The beginner photographers must maintain the folder on their computer by naming the single focus option, continuous focus option etc so that they need not find out the focus option's photographs.

Instruction - Don't be in a hurry to learn every focus option in one go. It takes time. More time and more patience give more and better understanding. You must train yourself gradually to grasp the single-focus option and focusing the topic in a better way.

Single focus option? This option works better when you focus on the stationery subject and your focus never shifts from one point to another point until your next focusing command. This option works better on all the stationery and non-moving subjects. You do not require to change or readjust the focus options

Continuous-servo? - Beginner photographers hardly maintain the habit of changing focus options and sometimes they shoot running people, and running the car on the single focus option. But you must keep on the changing focus option as per the subject requirement. If you are planning to shoot wildlife then you must switch to the continuous focus option in advance.

Auto Focus Option? Your camera may or may not have this option. I guess high-end professional cameras are carrying this option. But you must check your camera. This autofocus option picks one option between the Single focus and continuous focus options automatically. The camera senses the subject whether it is moving or still and then choose the best option to shoot. but it’s always possible that the automatic selection will make a mistake. Please be careful.

Conclusion - Choose the option as per the subject and I suggest avoiding the Auto Focus option (Which makes mistakes) is a good idea. At least try every option and choose your best option.

Keep experimenting & have wonderful and happy photography life for you all.
