Sometime, Bad light works BETTER

Prasenjeet Gautam

Whenever we talk about the photography profession then most of the photographers always discuss the better light options, how to find out the better light conditions, how to create better light condition, what are the quick tips to shoot in the better light option. I have also seen beginner photographer always hunt for the better light to shoot, they spend lots of time and energy to explore better light. But here I would like to mention that sometime BAD light also work better than better light or perfect light.

See the above posted photograph, Monument – Safdarjung Tomb, New Delhi, INDIA. It was dark inside the tomb, No light inside to shoot. The light is coming from the DOOR only. It was so tough to shoot or tough to manage the light because less source of the light. Anyhow I managed and I shot this tomb. Now see the result. It is now one of my favourite photographs.

The purpose of writing this article, No photographer try to shoot against the bad weather condition, bad light condition etc. Being a photographer I also love natural light, perfect weather condition and I don’t like harsh light, backlight, sidelight, midday sunlight sometime my subject is not visible correctly in the poor light. But sometimes accepting challenging situations and converting those challenges into opportunity is also called brilliant photography.

If you google and search for the rare photographs then there are maximum number of the photographs are available and they were shot in bad weather condition and the results are brilliants.

Few important tips to shoot in bad weather

  • Try to shoot in rain, after rain etc but carry all the protectors to protect your camera and lens from the water. Even a single drop of water can spoil your camera sensor. Take better care of the photography kit.
  • Try to shoot extreme harsh light, maximum temperature etc to find rare subject to shoot
  • Try to shoot in extreme foggy condition
  • Try to shoot in winter when the temperature is in Minus degree etc

Conclusion – We always search for the better light conditions but better light condition not always help to you become better photographer but shooting in extreme bad weather/light conditions will always convert you to as a better photographer who can handle/control any worst or better light condition to shoot the subject brilliantly. TRY and see the result, this exercise help you to face extreme weather conditions. Maybe one day you only like shooting in worst weather conditions.

Keep experimenting! Have a wonderful and happy photography life to you all
