Portrait Photography with Natural Light

Prasenjeet Gautam

Natural light, quality light (Indoor & outdoor) is a hidden asset for all beginner to Pro level photographer. Understanding light shape, natural light’s hidden assets are the main important keys to shoot portrait indoors or outside. I must write here that natural light delivers better results than artificial light. Once you started observing the natural light then there is a 100% possibilities of getter your desired lights.

There are hundreds of ways of getting good natural inside your room, studio for your portrait shoot. Let’s discuss how the photographer can achieve a good natural light for the photo-shoot. The photographer must keep their photography eye open to observe the natural light to shoot the subject or find the light source inside the room or studio. Natural light plays an intense role in outdoor as well as indoor photography.

When we start photography as a career, we hardly notice the natural light but as long as you grow as a pro-level photographer, your sense of photography also grow or become more experienced than we really understand the value of the natural light and then we always try to explore natural light to shoot.

Let’s discuss the natural light to shoot a portrait.

Window light – Try to find out the window where you stand your subject to shoot. Your first priority to find out the window from where you get good natural light but not direct light reaching to your subject means no harsh light on to the subject. Window light creates a magic light effect for your portrait shoot and sometimes this light can not be created with artificial light. Window light also gives a good backlight to create a stunning shot.

Creative Light shape – If possible cut out of the paper sheet to add on the windows to create better lighting shapes to capture your subject. Creating a light shape with the help of a paper cutout is one of the creative perspectives of shooting a portrait. A colourful transparent sheet can be placed on the window to add colour to your portraits. Try it

Use of softboxes – When the natural light is harsh, then using a softbox is a good idea to capture the stunning shot. There are other photography accessories that help to convert harsh light into soft light like the diffuser option.

Conclusion – Whenever you have a plan to shoot a portrait then your first job is to find out the natural light source. Not even portrait photography but you can add natural light to any photography genres. Must cultivate habit in you to keep exploring the natural light. This really works.

Keep experimenting! Have a wonderful and happy photography life to you all
