Documentary Photography ?

Prasenjeet Gautam

Generally, photographers and viewers are a little confused about documentary photography, for them, journalism photography and Documentary photography are equal and convey the same story or information. But It is very different from each other, Documentary photography refers to chronicling events or important historical events. They present strong documented information in form of the photography. Documents mean carrying a strong impression of the historical events and conveying a piece of strong information. Real-life incidents and historical incidents are covered by the camera, documentary photography was a vital way of bearing witness to world events called Documentary Photography. Breaking news stories covered by the camera is called photojournalism photography.

It describes the art of capturing people, celebrities, politicians, places, war information, events, and events that are historically, politically, or socially significant. When there was no radio, no TV, no electronic media etc that time documentary photography has been one of the leading drivers of social change for over a century.

The photographer plays a major role in documentary photography and raises the curtain of truth by portraying people, places and events. Their photographs offer viewers an accurate visual record of history. Photographers connect so beautifully historical events to the viewers.

A good documentary photographer who creates good storytelling photographs contains honest and true captures from his heart. good observation and without intervention captured. A Factual film that often includes a strong storyline, told through interviews, observation, and/or narration.

Few Important Tips to shoot documentary photos

Don't be an art director - Never ask people to change their mood, clothes, body language, body posture, where to stand, how to move etc. Capture like a candid photographer.

Be open to life - be ready to unfold the truth, incident etc ready to accept and convey to the viewers. Show your candid shot and dare to publish.

One step back - When capturing the subject along with the places then you need to step back and capture the maximum room of the area to create a strong story.

Observe Edges - Sometimes you need to observe the corner of the frame and must try to add an interesting corner to the image. Focusing only centre object may create a boring story.

No photoshop - Sometimes no photoshop images are the best document. dare to shoot as the scene looks, never fear of unwanted object occurred the image. The purpose must be great storytelling photographs. Historical images may excuse errors.

Be ready with the camera - there is no second chance to capture interesting event photographs. Always be ready to capture every interesting moment which conveys a strong story.

Keep exploring and experimenting. Have a wonderful and happy photography life to you all.
